Operation and Maintenance Guide — DPF Soot Purifier Filter Cleaning Procedure

When diesel generator sets are kept on long-term standby, undergo regular trial runs and load tests, a large amount of soot particulate matter is generated. As the core component for intercepting black smoke, the filter element of the DPF black smoke purifier will accumulate soot and ash after long-term operation. This leads to increased equipment backpressure, reduced filtration efficiency and poor exhaust emission.
Unlike disposable consumables, the DPF filter specially made for generator sets by Lvgu Environmental Protection can be repeatedly washed and regenerated for cyclic reuse. Standard cleaning and maintenance can greatly extend the service life of the filter element and reduce the operation and maintenance cost of the machine room.

01. Necessity of Filter Cleaning

After long-term operation of the DPF on generator sets, a great number of carbon particles and dust ash will build up inside the micropores of the filter element:
  • The pores of the filter get clogged, resulting in higher backpressure of the equipment;
  • Poor exhaust hinders the normal operation of the generator set;
  • Black smoke purification efficiency declines, and visible black smoke appears;
  • Failure to clean for a long time will cause hardening and permanent blockage of the filter element, leaving replacement as the only option.
Therefore, regular cleaning and regeneration is a key maintenance measure to ensure stable unit operation and continuous compliance of exhaust emissions.

02. Pre-Cleaning Precautions
Shutdown and Cooling: Turn off the generator set and purification equipment in advance, and allow full cooling for more than 30 minutes to prevent scalding during disassembly under high temperature and damage to the filter element caused by sudden temperature drop.
Power Cut Protection: Shut down the electronic control system of the equipment and take protective measures for all circuits.
Standard Disassembly: Loosen the equipment flange clamps and fixing bolts, then pull out the filter assembly steadily to avoid collision and deformation.

04. Daily Operation & Maintenance Tips

  • Do not blast the filter with high-pressure water forcefully or expose it to intense sunlight/rapid high-temperature drying during cleaning to prevent filter damage.
  • After cleaning, air-dry the filter naturally in ventilated areas or dry it at constant temperature to fully evaporate internal moisture. Ensure no residual water remains inside filter channels, so as to avoid carbon accumulation and secondary clogging caused by dampness after reinstallation.
  • After drying, inspect the filter for intact structure, deformation and blocked pores. Reinstall it into the equipment only when confirmed unobstructed and clean, then fasten the flanges to finish overall assembly reset.
